The Fabulous Frances Faye in Australia | Nick ChristoPhotos - Will Sheehan

Frances Faye
, born in 1912 as Frances Cohen, was an American cabaret and show tune singer and pianist. She was a Jewish girl who began her career at the age of fifteen in nightclubs and gin joints where she first became a star. She was also an outspoken bisexual, was related to Danny Kaye, was a regular on the club scene in Australia in the 60s and 70s, and yes, she was Fabulous!

Nick Christo and his three-piece band, seek, and indeed succeed, in evoking the memory and the personality of the woman, and the atmosphere of her live performances.

While a large photo of Frances commands centre stage, Nick, at times, seems to channel Frances, while at other times comments on aspects of her life and career, both of which were outrageous and flamboyant. Quotes used in the show to describe Ms Faye include "an entertainer's entertainer" to "the most polished act".

With tunes such as A Taste of Honey and Porgy, I is your Woman, we get a glimpse of her vocal style. While touches of Fever, Just a Gigolo, and even Cole Porter show the range of Frances/Nick.

The show is sharp and focused, and at an hour in length, the perfect cabaret experience. Nick and the band work well together in the intimate space, ensuring the audience remains a part of the fun.

Together with director Neil Gooding, Nick Christo has fashioned a loving, affectionate tribute to this almost forgotten star. It is no wonder that she influenced the likes of Reg Livermore and Peter Allen. If the show has a return season anywhere, don't dare miss out.
